When Tobey Maguire left Michael Rubin’s famous 4th of July bash last week, his unexpected PDA with model Lily Chee caused quite a stir. After all, Maguire is 49 years old and the 20-year-old is only a few years younger than his teenage kids. But while the internet may be buzzing about this potential couple, Maguire’s ex-wife Jennifer Meyer is doing her best to clear it all up.
On Instagram, Meyer, who was married to Maguire between 2007 to 2016, responded to a few hateful comments. One user, for example, questioned why the Spider-Man star was “banging someone 3 years older than” their daughter, Ruby.
“I don’t usually respond to such nonsense, but he was kindly helping a friend to her car,” Meyer responded, per Page Six, adding he was just “being a good guy.”
“And now he has blasted online for dating someone he is not,” she continued. “But thank you for your rude comment, I hope it made you feel better today. Wishing you love and light.”
“I’m disengaging after this…,” Meyer continued in another comment. “But don’t believe everything you read (I’m sure you were taught that somewhere). Tobey is as good of a guy as it gets.”
But while Meyer’s take on the dating rumors is crystal clear, it seems there may be more between Maguire and Meyer than she even knows.
According to a source for Us Weekly, Maguire and Chee “aren’t seriously dating but have been hanging out.”
“Tobey knew Lily and her girlfriends were invited to the party and they planned to hang out and meet up,” the source continued, suggesting they’d been more friendly than just helping her get in her car. “He was introduced to her through [businessman] Richie Akiva and mutual friends.”
“They were together all night hanging out, having fun and went to an after-party with a big crew,” the source continued.
So while this source says there’s more truth to the rumors than Meyer thinks, it’s hard to determine who’s really telling the truth. Regardless, it’s safe to say Meyer will always have her ex’s back.
