The Oscars has always been a hotbed for strange controversies, but one event truly stands out, and now we understand why it happened.
Since its inception in 1929, the night where celebrities flaunt their looks and vie for the golden trophy has captivated millions worldwide. From Ricky Gervais’ controversial jokes about Jeffrey Epstein and Will Smith slapping Chris Rock to Leonardo DiCaprio’s love life and John Cena turning up ‘naked,’ many memorable moments have occurred at the Oscars over the years.
However, one particular moment remains unmatched: when Angelina Jolie and her brother, James Haven, made a bizarre statement on the red carpet in 2000.
It’s been 24 years since that moment, and if you remember it being plastered all over the news, you’re officially old. At the time, the then-24-year-old Jolie won an Oscar for her performance in “Girl, Interrupted.”
When Jolie took to the Academy Awards stage to accept the award for Best Supporting Actress, she expressed her love for her brother Haven, then 26, who accompanied her. Jolie said, “I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now. He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that.”
But when they went outside, they posed for a picture, and Jolie turned and kissed Haven on the lips. Why did they do it? She revealed months later that it was just ‘brotherly’ love.
Jolie told Entertainment Weekly, “My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter.”
Haven also commented, telling the Daily Mail in 2007, “I did not give Angie a French kiss. It was something simple and lovely. She was about to go off to Mexico to finish filming ‘Original Sin’ with Antonio Banderas. I congratulated her on the Oscar win and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. It was snapped and became a big thing.”
But that’s not the only rather bizarre move Jolie has made over the years. When she was married to her second husband, Billy Bob Thornton, the two decided to wear a vial of each other’s blood around their necks. Speaking about that moment in 2014, Thornton said it wasn’t so weird at the time.
The “Bad Santa” star explained, “She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets, and wore them around our necks just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one. Same thing. From that, we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks.”
